He had been ill for some time, having been diagnosed with a very unusual cancer in 2010. Treatment had held it at bay, and Phil was not one to moan - he preferred to get on with the building, and the painting, and the living of life.

This year he began to deteriorate a little, but more nuclear therapy seemed to help. But by Easter it was clear he was losing the battle. The last two weeks of his life were something no-one should have to experience. He died on the morning of Sunday, May 18th in the arms of his family, and we are relieved that he is at peace now.

There is outstanding work, which will be sorted in due course. In the meantime, all we have is memories, and the pieces of work he left behind here at home and in other homes and museums all over the world. He will never be forgotten.

I'm currently building a few large and complex projects.

The Javelin from Airfix is without doubt a terrific kit. The detail of the parts is excellent and it's a model that many builders have been keenly awaiting. I'm also well on with a 1/24 Airfix Mosquito, which has been one step forward and two back, and now needs a new undercarriage in metal to support it.

Getting both of these to the stage you see in the photos has taken plenty of time. In between, to keep me going, I like to relax with something a little faster-moving. Enter.....another Airfix kit. They're doing well these days aren't they? This little Vampire is quite toothsome - nice detail, good fit, lovely decals, started and finished in under a week.

Now I'm ready to move the bigger builds along. Metal Mosquito legs have arrived, Javelin is almost complete. There's a lot to be said for the busman's holiday.
I prize accuracy and authenticity and felt the little models couldn't give me what I sought.

Lately though I've had good reason to reverse my views. Tempted by a very attractive kit, I built an Italeri Wessex helicopter. The quality of the mouldings and the detail were amazing and quite unexpected. Since then I've got carried away and built Italeri's Whirlwind helicopter and their Kamov Ka 52 attack helicopter and their Flying Banana. There was no stopping me now. From there I built Revell's Me 1099, Hasegawa's B-25J attack bomber and Revell's F-89 Scorpion. All superb kits from which I obtained frankly thrilling results. A lesson learned which just goes to prove that modellers can always expand their repertoire and reach new levels of enjoyment by keeping an open mind.

I'm still a big fan of 1/32 and 1/48 scale kits, but it seems that size is not, after all, everything.
This year don't be shy, show us what you got for Christmas. I'll show you mine! I want to thank everyone who supports my blog and to wish you a fabulous Christmas and a very plastic New Year.
Since I'm currently building Moebius's Jupiter II, I suppose I had a subliminal eye out for 'Lost in Space' accoutrements.

This one turned out to be the robot from that long ago TV series, so, add to basket! A straight forward build like this wouldn't disrupt the bigger projects I'm currently working on. Besides, I can try out that new Alclad chrome finish that's burning a hole in my paint box.

As you can see from the photos it worked out well. The plastic was a bit on the thick side, which gives its age away. Transparencies were surprisingly clear and part fit was great. The robot is of diminutive size, requiring little commitment in the way of display. I'm anxious to finish the ship and see him in context.

Isn't it funny - for years you don't see a single jet then three come along at once!

First is the superb new release from Airfix. I do enjoy these cold war jets and the Javelin is well overdue. The detail is good enough for any enthusiast, but there's still room for the odd update set or two.

Next is the new Great Wall MiG 29. The kit comes beautifully packaged; the upper wing/fuselage section is in its own box, and even the weapons are in a separate blister pack. The detail is sumptuous, the transparencies flawless and the decals look fabulous. The fit of some of the parts is not without problems but they are not insurmountable. The two engines are superb, although again the parts don't always want to meet smoothly but there's only one winner. The cockpit looks good, but will look even better with a colour etched replacement.

Finally, and by complete contrast is this Heller kit. The Mirage IV is the subject of this kit, and is the victim of some dodgy 1970's technology. Thick chunky plastic, raised and scant detail throughout might put some modellers off. But this is the only kit available in 1/48 scale and I believe it will build up into something rather special. Also, it will be nearly a foot and a half long! I have the Neomega cockpit set, resin afterburner cans and new landing gear. This will become a classic model of a beautiful classic aeroplane.

More to follow in due course.

I've been enjoying a slight change of direction in my own personal building, and when this kit from Pegasus first appeared, my boyhood tv memories came right back and I knew I had to have the squid and its prey......

When I started to root in the box, I realised that even though it was a good kit, it could be better. The thing I needed to bring it to life was a lighting set. I had a surf around, knowing that there is always someone somewhere making just what you want, no matter how obscure or arcane. VoodooFX are often the go-to guys for this, and sure enough, they offer the perfect set for illuminating my tentacle-tangled Nautilus. I send off for it, and after a short wait the set duly arrives, amid much excitement from a grown man. And that's when the build comes to an abrupt halt. Circuit boards, resistors, lights and diagrams - I am all at sea. Not for the first time, I have over-reached. Rescue comes in the form of good friend, model-retailer and all-round genius Mr John Guiver, who comes round to solder, drill and fix. Between us we get the lighting set integrated and John adds a bonus sound effect - sonar blips. Yes, I know it wasn't strictly invented then but hey, this is my fantasy model, and I like the way it sounds.

Construction forges ahead, revealing stunning surface detail and not just on the sub. The squid and its rocky base are resin and look superb. The photo-etched parts - braces, hand rails and hand grips - are easier to fit than they look. The whole kit is a joy to build and paint. Other Nautilus builders have chosen different colour schemes but I an enamoured with my blue squid and mineral-glinting rocks. At £50 it's a terrific kit (though lighting was extra of course), and I was lucky to have such a helpful collaborator. This one is definitely not for sale....

First is the new Nautilus from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The kit is from Pegasus and features photo etched parts and a giant squid cast in resin. Extra features are the lights and sound on this collaborative build. At this stage it's hard to know whether there are more tentacles inside or out.... Fantastic! More on it soon.

Next up is Airfix's new Lancaster, with its odd fuselage/wing assembly and warped fuselage. I like it though. I decided to deviate from the hallowed path of brown/green/black camo and take the road less travelled, with this unusual but colorful Canadian scheme. There is still plenty of work to do on it. Ten minutes here, ten minutes there....

Third is Italeri's new Hurricane in 1/48. Although it has plenty to commend it - it has an engine and some photo etched parts and it's cheaper than Hasegawa's - the fit of the main parts is ponderous to say the least. The wings will be anhedral if you don't lean on them a bit! I'll finish it soon, and it will look like a Hurricane should.

Academy's awesome CH-53 in 1/48 scale is terrific. It's a big complex piece that I've been working on (and off) for ages. It's slowly but surely coming together. Eduard's finest cockpit is installed and an excellent set of decals is waiting in the wings as it were. Next, exhaust stains.

Finally, the new Tupolev Tu-2 in 1/48 scale from the new Chinese company Xuntong Model. Even at this early stage of construction you can tell it's a bit of quality. Lovely interior, great engines - you get two. Are those bombs or pontoons from a drilling platform? Really unusual and certainly memorable.

More on these soon.Philip Goodierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12074986690474682066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-385070402644667612.post-51810514929028118212013-08-01T01:49:00.000+01:002013-08-01T01:49:35.946+01:00My Wife Calls Them Vanity ProjectsIn the last few weeks I completed these two pieces. I'm really enjoying 1/72 scale in a way I never thought I would. The detail seems much improved from what I remember, and it's been great fun. It's meant that the kits have needed minimal aftermarket enhancements - always good. Less has seemed like much more, although I have put in as much effort as a 1/48 model requires. Very satisfying and highly recommended.
The F-89 was first tooled in 1991, and yes, it is a bit rough around the edges, but nothing serious. It is nicely engraved and riveted, well weaponed and offers two colourful aircraft to choose from. You can also pick a D or a J version. It's a kit I've been looking forward to building for some time. Bare metal and bright orange red. Fantastic. I've actually started work already.
I've had a brief departure from aircraft, just long enough to build this vinyl beast. The 'Spitter' from Jurassic Park was a tough act but no match for my hairdryer. He's been wrangled into shape and now he's in a cardboard box, headed for life in the big city.
The first one needs no introduction, but I'll do it anyway. It's Tamiya's classic Fairey Swordfish. And why is it a classic? Because there is practically nothing wrong with it at all. One quick moan - the metal rigging set is not included in a kit that costs £60 - but the fit, the detail and the accuracy are all spot on. Marvellous!

The second is an Airfix kit. Yes, I'm building Airfix kits again! And it's the new and very reasonable Typhoon in 1/72nd. So what do you get for your eight quid? Engraved panel lines, nice cockpit, detailed canon and gear bays. and a great decal sheet with two schemes. Any problems? An odd wings-to-fuselage fit but that's it. I was so taken with it that I went a bit mad. Full rivet job, extra cockpit detail, seat belts, levers, that kind of thing. Oh yes, and I spent eight days on it! In my defence, see the photos. It was worth it. Lovely.

These days I'm taking Airfix a bit more seriously. Hornby seems to have rejuvenated the brand.
Eduard has finally thrown its hat into the very large Spitfire ring and produced what is probably the best kit of the lot.

Inside their substantial and rather stout box is a Mk.IXc late, but it also has parts for the early version. Included too are outlines for alteration for their Brassin accessory items - engines, cockpit and flaps. The kit may be considered a jumping off point that could end in a superb diorama, should modellers so choose.

There are five sprues, including one for transparencies, plus one colour etch fret, a masking set and two decals sheets. There is exquisite rivet detail, and finely engraved panel lines that even Castle Bromwich would find a hard act to follow. The instruction booklet is beautifully presented and concise, and gives excellent detail for all six aircraft the kit allows you to choose from.

In my view, if Hasegawa released the same model today it would have half the detail for twice the money. You don't have to be a big Spitfire fan to enjoy this kit. It has a great deal to offer any modeller.

With his head held high and a trot not unlike a dressage horse, Lamarr had been a part of our family for fifteen years. He combined demanding with snooty in new ways, and never failed to communicate to you exactly what he wanted, whilst garnering everyone's ultimate respect. He had a penetrating stare that could pin you across the room and when he shouted, you answered.

For a cat who spent so much of his time sleeping and the rest eating, he was amazingly lithe and could swipe a sausage from your fork with lightning speed. Indeed, his leaping, swiping and sprinting made him a force to be reckoned with. And yet, he would bestow the most tremendous affection on you and made you feel like a king, albeit an under-king, in the Kingdom of Lamarr. He made full use of the nine lives available to him, chewing through electric cables with apparent impunity, and confounding all the vet's worst fears with a laconic eye and a cheeky resilience. Weighing in at only 8Ibs, he was a diminutive boy, but when he suddenly became thinner still, we worried with good reason. Over a few short weeks his life was stealthily taken from him by disease. No more lives were available to him. Yesterday, he was lost to us - the sad end of what was for the most part a healthy and happy life. We love him, and miss him so.Philip Goodierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12074986690474682066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-385070402644667612.post-12956848150913222252013-04-14T01:52:00.001+01:002013-04-14T01:52:57.194+01:00The Beast is BackA couple of years ago Academy issued their 1/72 SB2C, a superb kit. More recently another Helldiver appeared, this time from Cybermodel. Not cheap but another excellent kit.

But What of Revell's effort that was issued way back in 1997? Three guesses what I found in my stash. When I was asked about a Helldiver as a build, I remembered I had one somewhere. I had forgotten just how good it was - subtly rendered panel and rivet detail, lovely detail in both crew positions, and open bomb bay, engine and landing gear. There is even a set of brass etched parts - the brass dive brakes are beautiful. I felt I should make the most of this bounty, so I added an Eduard colour etch set, a set of brake pipes, engine wiring and a full rivet job. It was an intensive build but it was great fun.

For years I've been wanting to know when there will be an injection-moulded 1/48 Provost. Well, here it is, and this new tool from Fly looks pretty good.

A colourful end-opening box reveals a kit in medium brown plastic. Finely engraved panel lines and subtle rivet detail enhance parts that will be very straight forward in construction.

A selection of resin parts include ejector seats, centre console, sidewall detail, joystick and some minor levers. The instrument panel is in plastic, but it is very convincing.

The only thing i didn't care for - the big sprue gates, but they are soon dealt with with a sharp pair of cutters. The two-piece transparencies are a little cloudy but a bath in Johnsons' Klear will sort that out.

Four colour schemes are included: brown/green camo, blue/white, red/white/blue and an unusual Canadian aircraft with blue stripes over bare metal.

This may not be a kit for beginners, but a beautiful job can be realised by a modeller with a little more experience. Lovely kit, then. Get one! Priced around £30 and well worth a go.
After months of being 'in the kitchen' I have come up with one or two new items. A Focke Wulf Ta 152/R14 is in a nice 'what-if' scheme - it's the rewarding new kit from Hobby Boss. The Eduard BF 110E in 1/48 scale has been on my shelf for a couple of years, and only a long protracted build sees it show up here (many thanks to a patient client). And I'm always on the side of the under-rated helicopter, so here is the Italeri offering in 1/72 of the EH101 Merlin. That was a great little project. And finally I finished up with the iconic Zero, a great favourite of mine. This one is Trumpeter's version in 1/24 scale.

They're all certain going to be completed. No loft insulation here. These are up and coming kits on the bench and what a mixed bag they are.

The F-111 as you can see is well on the way. But so is the Merlin, it's just coming up for paint. Next is the new Focke Wulf Ta 152 C1/R14. Plus a Lightning F-2A. Then it's all there to be seen. A full and busy bench, the way I like it. More, of course, soon.
There's usually something new to see or learn. Sadly, when this model arrived shortly before Christmas it was clear that a close encounter with a blunt instrument such as the floor had caused considerable damage. This was compounded by the fact that a makeshift repair had been carried out in order for the model to be sold on. The landing gear had been sheared off and a hole had been drilled through the wing to re-locate one leg, then the join filled with epoxy. Someone had meant well but not had quite the requisite skills. It was almost sacrilegious. After scraping out a large lump of epoxy from the gear bay, I was able to repair the leg and fit a new bracket made from a bit of sprue. I've also since re-painted and re-fitted the repaired parts. I've sorted the upper wing - it's filled, rubbed down, masked and awaiting paint.
I don't enjoy them negative waves...I'd rather say something righteous and hopeful!

The articles on the ARC forum have been removed, and any focus on the builder's right to be recognised as the master of his own work can only be a good thing. Dedicated modellers work hard on their chosen builds and there should be no hijacking of credit. I'd like to pass on my thanks to Steve Bamford and his moderators, and to Jeff Fontaine of ARC. I've made some new friends and contacts, so silver linings present and correct. I've had a lot of messages of support and I thank the followers who took the time to contact me and express their feelings.

So.....back to the building - and let's be careful out there!Philip Goodierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12074986690474682066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-385070402644667612.post-80237036478102490122013-01-02T20:22:00.000+00:002013-01-02T20:22:42.302+00:00Boys and Girls Come Out to Plagiarise

I've often talked about my relationship with my customers on my blog. They have become trusted friends whose support has meant a great deal to me over the years I have been commission building.

Up until this year I was building for a client in the UK who I thought was an aviation and history enthusiast, and who I believed wanted to expand his personal collection of wartime fighters. So you can imagine what an unpleasant surprise it was when I found out why he really wanted my models.

Logging on to eBay yesterday I came across a very familiar photograph of a Ki.44 Tojo for sale. Nothing odd about that, except that I had built the Tojo the previous year and now here it was on eBay, apparently built by my client. It was not enough to rehash my own text and postal reassurances - he'd also added a link to 'his' build on the ARC forum - here it is for curious readers. http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal12/11201-11300/gal11218-Ki-44-Walker/00.shtm.

And this is where it got really upsetting - the same client has listed at least ten of the models he has bought from me in the ARC gallery, claiming all the work as his own. In the text he uses descriptions I myself wrote for him in emails passed between us when I was in the process of the builds. He didn't even bother to take new photos, but simply used the ones I had provided for him as I was completing his commissions.

It's entirely up to my clients what they do with my work after they have bought it, but I do however draw the line at plagiarism.

I'm now put in the position of having to safeguard anything I put out on the internet. I may be late to this - many others have discovered the downfalls of the virtual marketplace the hard way, but I was trusting of those in my own modelling community. So now my photo albums are private on Photobucket, and I'll have to start watermarking photos, possibly spoiling detail for viewers. It's been a disillusioning start to the new year for us. I know this client was also commissioning other builders in the past, so it's entirely possible that other builders have been taken in too. Let's hope it's a fairly isolated incident and that faith is restored soon.
It's Finished. In an earlier blog I was wailing about my Su-24 project. This is the one I've wanted to build from the moment of its release back in 2007, I think it was. I was getting a bit broody as I had to keep setting it aside for other work.

So, a few weeks ago I managed to complete the other work (well, most of it) and it was out once more with the Fencer. This turned out to be the best part of the build. After all the distractions causing me at one point to spray it the wrong colour, I was able to really get it going. And everything went so well - completing the cockpit, adding that very complicated landing gear, the very convincing jet cans and the weapons. It was a project that very much lent itself to some nice upgrades.
When a project like this is complete the sense of achievement can be quite overwhelming. Was it frustrating and a little aggravating? Very much so! But would I do it again? Certainly. What a very contrary hobby.

I'm not one for delving back into the past, but looking through my blog last week, I noticed the photos I had posted of my work room. Some subtle changes had taken place; back then it was more hair, less weight and a lot less clutter. All those kits in the photos are now built and living in new homes around the globe. Most of them have been examined on this blog. This has been the ideal setting for some of my most enjoyable projects. And for those not so enjoyable, all I can say is I'm glad there's no CCTV!

Over the last five years I've been able to develop my client base and now produce models in all kinds of genres for people in six or so different countries. Quite a change from a model shop in a sleepy village. I consider every one of these clients a friend, and feel fortunate to have met them even if it's only virtually. If the next five years are as good to me I'll be a happy builder.

I don't know about you, but the build I'm working on often transports me into the time period to which the craft belongs. In this instance I've been spending time on the deck of the '25 de Mayo' and wandering round Port Stanley. I get really quite involved in the era of the work in front of me. And isn't that a good thing? It keeps me focussed and I feel it shows in the results. Of course, it helped in this case that it was an excellent Hasegawa kit, I had the Eduard detail set AND the Aires resin sets for the cockpit, landing gear bays and speed brakes.

I used the best of the sets, adding a little bit of each. I combined a resin cockpit and Eduard colour etch parts, and with a little jiggling, it all went well. The resin instrument bezel was a poor fit though, and required some filler. I used the speed brakes supplied in the kit, since they seemed the better option.

The build all went pretty well, although I couldn't stop breaking those little lugs that the leading edge slats fit to! Photos of CANA aircraft mostly show dirty aircraft well used in the field. The basic scheme was US Navy, grey over white, so I used that with a brown wash to achieve the right look. I felt it was very effective.

The decals are from Condor, which are actually made in Argentina. The include three Dagger schemes and one for a Harrier, as well as three A-4s. A bit on the thick side but they performed reasonably well.
A look at the MB 326Yep, I've had all the remarks. But the orangeness is all part of the charm of this particular model. You'd be right to think that this is from the Italeri kit in 1/48 scale. But did you know that this tooling dates back to almost thirty years ago? Originated by Esci back in 1983, it features crisp mouldings, recessed panel lines and sharp rivet detail. But it is a bit disappointing in the cockpit area. To overcome this there is only one option - the very nice Oz-Mods cockpit set. It needs very little work. The cockpit tub just drops into the fuselage. "But" I hear you say "there aren't any guns!" Actually, this type of craft was operated by the Argentine air force and carried out an attack on the Royal Navy during the Falklands War. Gun and rocket pods were added as needed. Check it out, very topical.
